AVYANNA

“His name isn’t Martex.”

Cadoc’s voice distracts me from staring at the figure before me. I turn to look at him, curious as to why he seems so angry. “What’s crawled up and died inside of you this morning?”

“Language, Avyanna. You are still a royal. Please speak as if you have some decency about you.”

“My apologies, Mother. I just wanted to know what has him so twisted up.”

“It could be due to the fact that this man not only made it to the ball last night undetected, but he also managed to get you alone for an indiscernible amount of time.”

Cadoc’s words have my father standing from his chair and stalking across the room to Martex. Well, maybe not Martex based on what Cadoc just said.

“You were alone with my daughter. How dare you? What makes you think you have the right to do such a thing?”

The man formerly known as Martex merely regards me with a smirk. It’s clear he’s remembering the things that happened last night, the things only the two of us know about.

“I have all the right. Besides, she didn’t exactly run away from me. We enjoyed ourselves, didn’t we, Princess?”

Everyone turns to me, their expressions all expecting me to give them answers that I don’t have.

“Someone needs to tell me exactly what’s going on from the beginning. I feel like I missed a major part of the issue here.”

“His name is Xanth.”

I gasp at his words, the realization hitting me dead in the chest. This is the man who has been a hindrance for our armies, the man General Thorn described as ruthless and vengeful.

“You’re human.”

“Ah, yes. I am. It seems you know of me already.”

I hate the way he makes me feel, even now, fully clothed and in front of my family.

“I know of you, yes. Ruthless. Cunning. Shall I continue, or would you like to list them off?”

Placing a hand to his chest, he fakes a hurt look as he stands to head my way. Cadoc steps in the way to block his path, his anger making him a formidable opponent.

“I would move if I were you. I may not be as big as you, but I’m not afraid to fight dirty. How do you like your kneecaps?”

Cadoc looks over his shoulder to me, his eyes relaying to me that I should be prepared for a fight. Slipping out of the way, he stands just off to the side with my parents as they watch Xanth come my way.

“What made you decide to lie to me? Was it all a game?”

“It was a game at first. I wanted to see how close I could get to you, the perfect prim little Princess Avyanna.” My anger rises with his admission, my hands fisting at my side. “But then you approached me. In a room full of Fae elite and royals, you left your throne to walk my way. Why?”

“Because I did. It doesn’t matter why I chose to. What matters is that you decided to come into my home and deceive me.
